Solo Travel 101: How to Prepare for Your First Solo Trip

Have you ever dreamed of traveling solo but felt too nervous to take the leap? I completely understand—I’ve been in that exact spot before. It can be intimidating and overwhelming, but if I could do it, you absolutely can too. Solo travel is an incredibly rewarding experience that offers freedom, flexibility and self discovery opportunities. I will share some tips that helped me prepare for my first solo trip, despite my initial anxiety.

Choosing The Right Destination

Deciding where to go for your first solo trip is a crucial step in your travel journey. The ideal location should be safe, easy to navigate and offer exciting activities without overwhelming you. Here is how to decide the perfect destination for your first solo trip:

  • Start close to home:

If you’re anxious about travelling alone, you can start with a local destination within your country before going abroad. This will help build your confidence and before you know it, you will be navigating the world like a seasoned traveler.

  • Consider comfort and safety:

Choose popular destinations known for their safety and friendly locals. Countries like Portugal, Japan, Singapore, Netherlands and Canada are highly recommended destinations for solo-travelers due to their hospitable environment and low crime rates.

  • Pick a destination with an easy transportation system:

A city with reliable and efficient public transport makes navigating solo travel effortless. Places like Barcelona, Singapore, and Amsterdam have great metro systems, making it easy to explore without any problems.

  • Find solo-friendly activities:

Destinations with group tours, cultural experiences, and walking tours help you meet new people while maintaining your independence. Lots of places like Prague, and Rome offer a lot of solo-friendly activities. Checkout sites like Expedia and Tripadvisor that offer plenty of tour packages for different destinations.

Do Thorough Research of the Destination

Once you have decided on your destination, it is time to start research and planning.

  • Research your destination:

Do your research about the local laws and customs of the destination to avoid any misunderstandings. Ensure to check the travel advisories and research common scams and areas to avoid. Research about restaurants to eat, places to visit and activities to do.

  • Book accommodation in advance:

Choose hotels, hostels, or Airbnbs with good ratings and reviews from solo-travelers. Ensure the accommodation offers safety features like 24-hour security and locks.

  • Plan your transportation and navigation:

Public transportation is typically more affordable, so, consider using buses, trains, or metro systems. Download offline and navigation maps for easy access and research best ways to get to your accommodation from the airport safely. Use apps like Wanderlog to plan detailed itineraries and explore travel guides for your destination.

Share your Location and Itinerary with Friends and Family

Traveling solo is exciting, but your safety should always be the priority. Regardless of how far away you are from home, it is always good practice to share your location and itinerary with trusted friends and family. This can be done easily by using real-time location-sharing apps like Google Maps or Find My Phone.

Keeping your loved ones informed ensures everyone knows where you are in case of emergencies. They can also help you navigate issues if your plan unexpectedly changes.

Learn the Local Language of the Destination

Travelling solo to a foreign country can be intimidating, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the language. Learning a few essential phrases beforehand can improve your experience and make it easier to connect with locals.

Start with the basics like “hello”, “thank you”, “goodbye”. You can go further by learning how to ask for directions, how to order food and using transportation.

Consider using language apps like Duolingo and Google translate to help you learn common words quickly.

You don’t need to be fluent to enjoy your trip. Knowing a few words can boost your confidence, show respect to the people and culture, and make your solo travel experience better.

Be Open to Meeting New People

One of the most rewarding aspects of solo travelling is meeting new people and engaging in meaningful conversations. Approaching strangers might feel intimidating, especially for introverts like myself, but it often leads to valuable connections and insightful experiences.

To navigate social interactions confidently, start with small talk. A simple ‘hello’ or a friendly smile can open the door to conversation. You can also ask casual questions like food recommendations or compliment something about the other person.

Public places like museums, cafes, and group tours are great for meeting people. Be mindful of the cultural differences and adapt accordingly.

Avoid secluded areas when engaging in conversations with a stranger and if a conversation feels uncomfortable, politely excuse yourself.

Meeting new people can enhance your solo-travel experience, and even lead to lifelong friendships. Stay open, be cautious and embrace the adventure of meeting new people.

Be Flexible With Your Plans

Like anything else in the world, travel plans don’t always go accordingly. Being adaptable and open to change can make your journey more enjoyable. Flexibility is very important and solo-travel allows you the freedom to change plans with ease.

  • Expect the unexpected:

It is important to have a backup plan as transportation delays, unexpected closure, or weather changes can disrupt your initial plans. Be spontaneous – sometimes the best experiences come from unplanned moments.

  • Be open to new opportunities:

Locals may suggest locations that are not on your itinerary, or you may meet people who want you to participate in an activity. Accepting new experiences can make your trip more memorable.

  • Avoid over-scheduling:

Having an itinerary with too many activities can lead to exhaustion, so leave room for exploring at your own pace. Prioritize must-see attractions while leaving time for relaxation and unexpected adventure.

Being flexible allows you to embrace the solo travel experience without unnecessary stress. Go with the flow, adapt to changes, and enjoy your trip!

Register with your Country when Travelling Abroad

Most countries offer a free service to its citizens that allows the government to contact you in case of an emergency at your destination or a personal emergency at home.

By registering, you can stay informed and receive crucial updates, including alerts about natural disasters or civil unrest before or during your travels.

If you are Canadian, you can register here: Registration of Canadians Abroad.

Finally, Just Go! If you are waiting for someone to join you on a trip, you might be waiting a long time. So book that trip, enjoy your company, meet new people and have an exciting adventure. Happy Solo Travels!
